View Article  Love Angel Music Baby
The other day while Christmas shopping I decided to pick up Gwen Stefani's solo album Love Angel Music Baby (L.A.M.B).

I love Gwen and I love No Doubt, but not sure this is what I was expecting. Part of me thought it was a bit of a shameless plug for her clothing line and part of me thought she has no idea what to write or sing about (regardless of the other famous friends who have joined her on this album). Maybe she was feeling at a loss without her No DOubt bandmates? The lyrics are pretty weak (ok bad). The music all over the place and overall I found myself being reminded of Madonna (80's Madonna), Salt 'n' Peppa, New Order and even TLC at some points which really shouldn't be a bad thing. I had to play it a few times before it grew on me. (Granted, play anything enough and you begin to get used to it!) The first single is one of the stronger songs on this.

But I must admit, I do like the album (although there are a few tracks that I always seem to skip). I like it because it's fun and she's obviously having fun, and it's full of all that happy girlie fun fur and glitter type of stuff. In a nutshell, that is why I like the album because I like to be reminded of happy fun glitter girlie stuff.

I hope her next album is better. For now though, I will be content with this one. Call it my guilty pleasure.

So last weekend I decided it was time to go through my CD collection and pull out all the stuff I don't listen to (or never listened to) and see if I could sell it. At the same time, perhaps remind myself of what I do have!

I used to work in a music store. That means alot of my CDs I got from the label reps since they bring stuff in to get you to play it etc. so that it will sell. It also means I have a lot of CDs.

I managed to pull out 82 CDs. Nothing noteworthy. Just to prove that point - I only got $25 for the 80 of them. But something is better than nothing and now I have more shelf space for stuff I will listen to.

At any rate, I decided it was time to also listen to some old CDs that I haven't listened to in ages, or in some cases, never listened to. (Yes this is possible! And yes, I also have some CDs in plastic still - I am ashamed to admit.)

These are the first batch of CDs that I have dusted off and are now in my CD case to listen to for the next little while when at work or in the car:

- New Order (The Best Of) - They really are a great band and I still know so many of the lyrics!
- Pearl Jam (Binaural) - Ok, I must admit I don't know this album very well which is why I will be listening to it now.
- Great Pianists of the 20th Century (Compilation) - A double album, one that I forgot I had. I quite like classical music. Good for those quiet moments or when I need to concentrate. Listening to disc 2.
- Cranberries (Not sure of album name since not on CD and don't have the cover with me - something about arguing!) - What happened to them?
- Fiona Apple (When the Pawn) - I believe this is her second album and one that I have always quite enjoyed. But again, what happened to her? Think I'll have to investigate this one!
- Bjork (Homegenic) - Another favourite of mine.
- The Beatles (Yellow Submarine) - My one and only Beatles album that I finally unwrapped out of the plastic. Surprising how much of the album I know. Quite enjoyed it, so perhaps I will have to go out and buy something else of theirs. There's usually some Beatles on sale somewhere!
- Roy Orbison (Greatest Hits) - I know you may be wondering where does this fit in, but I listened to it last night and I like Roy. Enough said.
- Smashing Pumpkins (Greatest Hits) - They were a really great band. It's funny how you forget these things when you don't listen to the music in a while.

I'll give you my next list when I rotate them again.

So I didn't end up watching Greyboy. There was a birthday drinking that had to be attended to at Fionn McCool's instead. Will have to have my introduction to his music another time!

Today I was invited to go see DJ Greyboy. I have never heard of him so I went to check out his site. He's playing this Saturday at Una Mas. I'll let you know what I think after Saturday.

View Article  Kareoke

So this weekend I went to Montreal. My cousin from BC was visiting and I thought she might enjoy it. My friend Anissa came with us and actually ended up being the driver.

Having similar tastes in music, as Jess slept in the back we blasted and sang along to a whole slew of cds. The car is actually the only place anyone will ever really hear me sing. Most of my friends haven't ever actually heard me sing.

So here's my thought. A few people have suggested on more one occasion that a group of us should go out kareoking. My response is always the same: "I don't sing. I will not go." But this is not true. I do sing, but only in the car. Just like some people only sing in the shower. (Ok and sometimes, maybe at a club while I'm dancing.)

So if anyone can find me a kareoke bar where you rent the room for a group of people and if the room is created to look exactly as if I am sitting in the front seat of a car, well, then I'll kareoke. (Of course I will be anal about this - I should be able to make my music selection from the dash board of this fake car just like I would in a real car!)

It seems logical to me. And I have to say, I'd be surprised if no one has thought of this before.
