Ok,
I am getting a little frustrated with my immune system. I need to build
it up and am not sure where to begin. You may have guessed that I have
a cold... yet again.
Ugh. Any suggestions are welcome. Monday, February 21

The
time has finally come for me to buy a place. I am looking to buy a
condo and I must admit that this has been quite a learning experience
so far.
Banks can be pretty tough. And this city very expensive. Also searching online can be a bit crazy. I haven't yet gone to look at any existing condos (people who are selling) - nothing has caught my eye yet, but I have gone to a couple of ones that are being built (and have to go see a few more). I do have an agent though who is looking. But the whole process can really make your head spin. And for those of you who want to one day buy a home - save, save, save. That is the best advice I can give so far! (Or buy with someone else, who hopeful has saved something!) Friday, January 28

As a child I used to love reading the Mr Men and Little Miss books! For
some reason I thought of this today and decided to see if the books
still existed.
![]() I found a WHOLE site dedicated to them! The only book I owned with them in it was Little Miss Tiny. Thursday, January 20

Again, something emailed to me:
TESTICULATING. Waving your arms around and talking Bollocks. BLAMESTORMING. Sitting around in a group, discussing why a deadline was missed or a project failed, and who was responsible. SEAGULL MANAGER. A manager who flies in, makes a lot of noise, craps on everything, and then leaves. ASSMOSIS. The process by which people seem to absorb success and advancement by sucking up to the boss rather than working hard. SALMON DAY. The experience of spending an entire day swimming upstream only to get screwed and die. PRAIRIE DOGGING. When someone yells or drops something loudly in a cube farm, and people's heads pop up over the walls to see that's going on. (This also applies to applause from a promotion because there may be cake.) MOUSE POTATO. The on-line, wired generation's answer to the couch potato. SITCOMs. Single Income, Two Children, Oppressive Mortgage. What yuppies turn into when they have children and one of them stops working to stay home with the kids or start a "home business". STRESS PUPPY. A person who seems to thrive on being stressed out and whiny. PERCUSSIVE MAINTENANCE. The fine art of whacking the crap out of an electronic device to get it to work again. ADMINISPHERE. The rarefied organisational layers beginning just >above >the rank and file. Decisions that fall from the "adminisphere" are often profoundly inappropriate or irrelevant to the problems they were designed to solve. This is often affiliated with the dreaded "administrivia" - needless paperwork and processes. 404. Someone who's clueless. From the World Wide Web error message "404 Not Found," meaning that the requested document could not be located. OHNOSECOND That minuscule fraction of time in which you realise that you've just made a BIG mistake (e.g. you've hit 'reply all') Tuesday, January 18

I
am sad to say that after having a belly ring for more than 10 years
(why do I feel that dates me somehow?) that this past weekend I removed
it. My belly is naked.
Quite some time ago my belly began to reject the ring and then stopped and that is where it hung on, barely. Greg and I looked at it and figured it was only time that the ring would get caught on something and get torn out and I'd scream in pain, lose the ring and no doubt have to get my torn belly stitched up. So to spare myself this mess, the ring was removed. It is very weird having a naked belly again. It looks very odd to me. So plain now. A lil bit sad. Monday, January 10

I survived Christmas and it was a lovely one shared with family. Right now I am sitting with a view of snow covered trees and dock overlooking a snowy and frozen river. It is completely silent with the exception of the keys I am typing. It is so beautiful outside. Soon we will be snow shoeing - for me it will be the first time. I have taken pictures already so there will be plenty to post when I get back into the city.

It's Christmas Eve! I can hardly believe that it is the holidays already. But I am sure that I say that every year.
I am finding that the older I get the more stressed I get about the holidays. I think alot of it has to do with trying to accommodate families and trying to see friends etc etc and get everything done. Emotions tend to run alot higher as well. (I am positive that's not just me though!) Two of my horoscopes made a point of telling me that I will be "fighting" - I certainly hope not, so I will have to make sure to be on my best behaviour. ![]() I finished all my Christmas shopping last weekend all in one go and had everything wrapped and under the tree by the evening. Did all the decorating and mailed cards out before that, so I was quite on the ball this year. So wherever you may be today, tomorrow or this week and regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas, another holiday or nothing at all, enjoy the spirit of the season. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Wednesday, December 22

The other day while Christmas shopping I decided to pick up Gwen Stefani's solo album Love Angel Music Baby (L.A.M.B).
![]() I love Gwen and I love No Doubt, but not sure this is what I was expecting. Part of me thought it was a bit of a shameless plug for her clothing line and part of me thought she has no idea what to write or sing about (regardless of the other famous friends who have joined her on this album). Maybe she was feeling at a loss without her No DOubt bandmates? The lyrics are pretty weak (ok bad). The music all over the place and overall I found myself being reminded of Madonna (80's Madonna), Salt 'n' Peppa, New Order and even TLC at some points which really shouldn't be a bad thing. I had to play it a few times before it grew on me. (Granted, play anything enough and you begin to get used to it!) The first single is one of the stronger songs on this. But I must admit, I do like the album (although there are a few tracks that I always seem to skip). I like it because it's fun and she's obviously having fun, and it's full of all that happy girlie fun fur and glitter type of stuff. In a nutshell, that is why I like the album because I like to be reminded of happy fun glitter girlie stuff. I hope her next album is better. For now though, I will be content with this one. Call it my guilty pleasure. Monday, December 20

Today I went to Romni Wools (658 Queen St.) to pick out some yarn for Greg's scarf. He only owns one (to my amazement) and I offered to make him one. I have never really shopped in a wool/yarn specialty shop before and the selection is beautiful!
We knew that he wanted a two tone striped scraf with the stripes running lengthwise as opposed to the standard horizontal. We made our way through the store and it seemed that the yarns we liked just got more and more expensive. Ultimately I understood why homemade goods cost so much in the stores when you purchased them. I can't imagine that people who sell their goods really make money on the time that they spend on the piece. They couldn't - I think most of the money they make would just cover the cost. So you'd just have to love what you were doing. At any rate, we chose two types of yarn: 2x ROWAN biggy print - 100% merino wool in a lovely olive/army green 2x GUYS Trends - 50% wool, 50% acrylic in a mixed green (so it goes from lights greens to dark greens with bits of pale yellow) They look pretty fantastic together! Now I just have to come up with the design. I think that that they will be fatter stripes. The ROWAN will be in a plain stitch as it varies in chunkiness and the GUYS one I will do a funkier stitch since it is an even consistency. I am excited about this new project! I will post pictures soon. Friday, November 26

Today
I got an interesting link from my friend Joan. It was of course
forwarded to her from someone else. It tells the story of the Braball
and the artist who made it. Essentially it is a ball made of thousands
of bras linked together. It weighs over 1800pds I think!
At any rate how this ball came to be is a really interesting story and kudos to the artist who organized and to all the people who helped her. Here is the story... I have posted one pic under my Misc Photo album, but you can find more on the official site.

Yesterday
it snowed. Not alot but enough to give me a fuzzy feeling inside with
thoughts of Christmas and all those other thoughts that come with that:
end of the year, meeting up with friends, shovelling the driveway,
getting stuck in snow mounds, coming home and the only sound you can
hear is the crunching of the snow your feet make... (one of my
favourite sounds actually!)
This morning when I went to get the paper at breakfast I noticed everything was covered in a light layer of snow again. More than yesterday. It was already melting by the time I drove to work, but it was nice anyways. Friday, November 12

So, for those of you who don't already know, I crochet. I learned when I was a kid and got back into it a couple of years ago when my friends started having babies. (I made a couple of baby afghans and they turned out surprisingly well!) I most recently made my friend Marcie a poncho for her daughter (it's too big of course!) and a baby sweater and matching bunny hat (sizing more accurate there). Anyhoo, I started working on an afghan for myself last year. I got to s certain and then life got busy and I put it aside. I picked it up again recently and finished off all teh squares and am now in the process of stiching the squares together. I am about half way done. I have pics but haven't posted them yet. (Will do that soon!) My next endaevor is to learn how to knit. There are far more books and patterns, and the patterns seem to be a lot more interesting and well, modern. Although if someone could recommend a good place to get crochet patterns, please let me know! Thursday, October 28

So last weekend I decided it was time to go through my CD collection and pull out all the stuff I don't listen to (or never listened to) and see if I could sell it. At the same time, perhaps remind myself of what I do have! I used to work in a music store. That means alot of my CDs I got from the label reps since they bring stuff in to get you to play it etc. so that it will sell. It also means I have a lot of CDs. I managed to pull out 82 CDs. Nothing noteworthy. Just to prove that point - I only got $25 for the 80 of them. But something is better than nothing and now I have more shelf space for stuff I will listen to. At any rate, I decided it was time to also listen to some old CDs that I haven't listened to in ages, or in some cases, never listened to. (Yes this is possible! And yes, I also have some CDs in plastic still - I am ashamed to admit.) These are the first batch of CDs that I have dusted off and are now in my CD case to listen to for the next little while when at work or in the car: - New Order (The Best Of) - They really are a great band and I still know so many of the lyrics! This past week I have been playing house so to speak. I have decided to actually see if I can cook. Cook a real meal that is. I made my first soup which was a pumpkin soup and I must say it turned out really well. Today I made a stove top lasagna and it was also pretty good. Although I think they have their serving sizes off. It was supposed to serve four, but I think 6 would be more like it. Monday, September 27

My friend Mary (who I have referred to before in my blog) lives in Orlando. So, there have been many emails between us recently regarding - the weather. Anyhoo, yesterday she mentioned that although Ivan wasn't coming their way, another one was. Of course I can't think of the name of it, but it started with a J and was a girls name. At any rate, I asked the question: "Who decides on these names anyways?" I had to laugh this morning when Mary sent me a lovely email explaining how this is decided. (Textbook Geek.) She obviously did her research, so let me now share with you: Reason to name hurricanes U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE , NOAA, National Weather Service Experience shows that the use of short, distintive given names in written as well as spoken communications is quicker and less subject to error than the older more cumbersome latitude-longitute identification methods. These advantages are specially important in exchanging detailed storm information between hundres widely scattered stations, coastal bases, and ships at sea. The use of easily remembered names greatly reduces confusion when two or more tropical storms occur at the same time. For example, one hurricane can be moving slowly westward in the Gulf of Mexico , while at exactly the same time anothe hurricane can be moving rapidly Northward along the Atlantic coast. In the past, confusion and false rumors have arisen when storm advisories broadcast from radio statio were mistaken for warning concerning an entirely different storm located hundreds of miles away. History of Hurricane Names For several hundred years many hurricanes in the West Indies were named after the particular saint's day on which the hurricane occurred. Ivan R. Tannehill describes in his book "Hurricanes" the major tropical storms of recorded history and mentions many hurricanes named after saints. For example, there was "Hurricane Santa Ana" which struck Puerto Rico with exceptional violence on July 26, 1825, and "San Felipe" (the first) and "San Felipe" (the second) which hit Puerto Rico on September 13 in both 1876 and 1928. Tannehill also tells of Clement Wragge, an Australian meteorologist who began giving women's names to tropical storms before the end of the l9th century. An early example of the use of a woman's name for a storm was in the novel "Storm" by George R . Stewart, published by Random House in 1941, and since filmed by Walt Disney. During World War II this practice became widespread in weather map discussions among forecasters, especially Air Force and Navy meteorologists who plotted the movements of storms over the wide expanses of the Pacific Ocean. In 1953, the United States abandoned as confusing a two-year old plan to name storms by a phonetic alphabet (Able, Baker, Charlie) when a new, international phonetic alphabet was introduced. That year, this Nation's weather services began using female names for storms. The practice of naming hurricanes solely after women came to an end in 1978 when men's and women's names were included in the Eastern North Pacific storm lists. In 1979, male and female names were included in lists for the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. |
